Wow...there has been a LOT going on the past couple of weeks with regard to hacks, breaches and other security related activity. That being said, lots of folks have been clamouring for the world's large security companies, Symantec included, to be more open about the role they play in world security in the broader context. There's been plenty in the news recently regarding encryption and SSL – which has led some people to wonder how safe the technology really is. As the leader of Symantec's Trust Services Products & Services organization, I want to assure you that SSL is safe. Below is some information that may help you understand why, and also inform you about the current state of SSL security.
First, the fundamental key strength of RSA 2048-bit certificates is solid and without question. Independent cryptography experts have confirmed this, and highly-respected publications such as the MIT Technology Review have published articles on the subject. As always, organizations that use SSL should make sure they use the strongest algorithms available.
Customers of SSL certificates should take specific actions to safeguard the security of their server-side private keys. They should put in place powerful network protections and should never utilize tools where private keys are revealed to third parties. Symantec never takes possession of any customer's SSL private keys.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Certificate Authorities that issue SSL certificates must never share the private keys of their roots. The trust in SSL by everyone – from end-users, to the companies that they communicate with, to the browsers that enable secure connections – all depend on Certificate Authorities to provide unequivocal security of their root keys.
As the world’s largest and most trusted Certificate Authority, we use best-in-class security processes to protect our roots. We do not share our private keys with any third-party company, government, organization or individual. To repeat: We never share our root keys, and never will. Period.

Imagine this: You’re at home one evening when a sudden storm knocks out your power. You reach for that flashlight you keep in the kitchen drawer just for emergencies. You flip the switch, and the flashlight asks for your location. That would be weird, huh?
Blue Smart PhoneWell, that could be exactly what’s happening — on your phone.
Since February 2011, people have downloaded the Brightest Flashlight app to more than 50 million Android devices — making it one of the most popular free apps on the Android marketplace. According to the FTC, most of these users probably didn’t realize that anytime they launched the app, it collected and broadcasted their locations and device IDs to advertising networks and other third parties.
Goldenshores Technologies, the developer behind the Brightest Flashlight, has agreed to settle FTC charges that the company didn’t adequately disclose what information it collected and shared — not in the app’s user agreement or anywhere else.

Abstract:
This paper will begin with a short review of the Alcubierre warp drive metric and describes how the phenomenon might work based on the original paper. The canonical form of the metric was developed and published in [6] which provided key insight into the field potential and boost for the field which remedied a critical paradox in the original Alcubierre concept of operations. A modified concept of operations based on the canonical form of the metric that remedies the paradox is presented and discussed. The idea of a warp drive in higher dimensional space-time (manifold) will then be briefly considered by comparing the null-like geodesics of the Alcubierre metric to the Chung-Freese metric to illustrate the mathematical role of hyperspace coordinates. The net effect of using a warp drive “technology” coupled with conventional propulsion systems on an exploration mission will be discussed using the nomenclature of early mission planning. Finally, an overview of the warp field interferometer
test bed being implemented in the Advanced Propulsion Physics Laboratory: Eagleworks (APPL:E) at the Johnson Space Center will be detailed. While warp field mechanics has not had a “Chicago Pile” moment, the tools necessary to detect a modest instance of the phenomenon are near at hand.

First, this is not a blog about a big corporate breach, or a massive new discovery. Rather, the researchers at Trustwave gained access to a botnet controller interface (the C&C element of a botnet) known as Pony and revealed the data within. Not surprisingly, as the vast majority of botnets target user credentials, this controller had a good deal of data related to passwords. While 2 million passwords might seem like a lot, it is really a drop in the bucket compared to many recent breaches. Think about Adobe who lost a minimum of 28 million, but is rumored to be closer to 130 million, login credentials to their services. Combine this with the fact that many people use the same password for all online accounts.
Webroot SecureAnywhere users are protected against botnet and keylogging malware in a number of ways. First, we have great visibility into the threats our users are encountering and in the vast majority of cases are able to instantly identify malicious software, including those which record keystrokes – even commercially available keyloggers. Second, we have layered technology which looks to neutralize applications which aim to record keystrokes or screenshots. Webroot’s Identity Shield looks at over 2 dozen specific tactics used by these applications and prevents data collection from unknown applications.
While the Trustwave blog is interesting from a password strength perspective, as many passwords recorded were very weak, it isn’t groundbreaking news, or even the largest discovery of its kind. What it is, is confirmation that this type of information is highly valuable and that cybercriminals are using all tools available to compromise online user accounts. It is also a good reminder that using a strong password policy, even for your personal accounts, is a good way to improve your security. After all, a compromised password can be fixed by resetting your password.

Who would win in a fight between Amazon’s drones and Google robots? That’s something we may have an answer to in a few years.
Following Amazon’s reveal of its new shipping drone project, Google has finally dished somedetails to the New York Times on its next “moonshot” project: humanoid robots, spearheaded by Android founder Andy Rubin.
After stepping down from his role leading Android earlier this year, there was plenty of speculation about what Rubin was working on at Google — but not many people guessed that Google was actively working on advanced robots.
Don’t expect a robot butler anytime soon, though. The NYT notes that Google’s robots are intended to work in manufacturing and online retail. Robots could replace some of the monotonous work in building devices, or eventually even deliver packages right to your door, for example.
“Like any moonshot, you have to think of time as a factor,” Rubin told the NYT. “We need enough runway and a 10-year vision.”
The timing of this announcement clearly aims to take some of the limelight away from Amazon, which announced its Amazon Prime Air drone project on Sunday night. While undoubtedly cool, many have questioned Amazon’s ability to deliver on its promise of robot deliveries. Advanced humanoid robots, on the other hand, have the potential to be more useful than small drones.
While Google isn’t revealing how much it’s spending on the robot research, the company has covertly snapped up several startups in the field, includingJapanese robotics company Schaft, Redwood Robotics, 3D vision companyIndustrial Perception, and Bot & Dolly (which built the robots that helped film Gravity). Google has also acquired Meka Robotics, advertising and design firmAutofuss, and advanced wheel design firm Holomni.
As Rubin explains it, Google hopes to release robotics products soon. It sounds like we could see Google’s robots before its self-driving car technology is readily available to consumers.
