The stock market's uninterrupted gains in recent months is giving rise to talk of a bubble, and perhaps this is the case within the scope of time. It is still far too soon to determine this, although further gains will cause us to consider sharply higher prices within the context of anemic economic growth. With this said, we are watching the Crude Oil futures market rather closely, for on a monthly basis - a bullish pennant pattern is forming that projects sharply higher prices...to new highs above the $150/barrel level. This would come as a surprise to many, but the fact of the matter is that there is likely to be a series of rolling euphoric moves across all asset classed stocks, commodities and bonds. Right now, it is simply stocks. But we are starting to see signs of more interest in the commodity groups than we have previously.

Therefore, we are interested in various energy stocks to participate in this rally, which by-the-way can occur within the context of a lower stock market just as occurred in 2007-2008. Our choices are several of the "laggards" such as Apache (APA), National Oilwell-Varco (NOV) and others. If there is risk in the long energy trade, then we would look for a monthly close below the 50-month moving average at $85/barrel level. In effect, this would suggest a mean reversion exercise towards the 200-month moving average that occurs roughly every 7-years. In this environment, we hate to think of what the world economy looks like, but suffice to say there will likely be very few long hiding places.

Austin-based re:3D just started a Kickstarter campaign for the Gigabot, a large-format 3D printer designed to build things on a 24x24x24 inch built envelope, allowing you to make much larger objects than you can with similar printers like the Makerbot. You can get the bot kit for $2,500 or a pre-assembled unit for $4,000.
The company was looking for a $40,000 pledge and has already surpassed $60,000, so there’s a good chance this thing will ship in time for when you need to build a 13,824 cubic-inch Christmas present.
The team launched the project at SXSW, and the company is founded by Samantha Lynne Snabes and Matthew Fiedler and a number of others with experience in manufacturing and design. They write:
At re:3D, we believe that the biggest problems in our world are solved by taking a bigger view. That’s why our project is aimed at designing the first large-format 3D printer… that you can take home with you. It’s not only about taking the amazing technology of 3D printing and amplifying it. We believe that by making a production-quality model of our 3D printer, and putting it in the hands of small businesses anywhere on the planet, will give them the flexibility to sustain their community, their business, and ultimately, the world we live in.
It prints primarily in PLA right now because it does not have a heated build plate, but there are plans to offer that option in the future. While PLA isn’t ideal for some industrial situations, the plant-based plastic is still very usable and workable.
You can check out the project here or just imagine what it would be like to print out your own head, to scale, in corn-based resin.

The number of students enrolled in a computer science major continues to rise dramatically.
According to a recent Computing Research Association report, the percentage of undergraduate students enrolled in a computer science majors has risen by double digits for the third year in a row. And Ph.D. enrollment in computer science is also up.
The CRA report was compiled from the responses of 193 academic departments in the US and Canada that grant Ph.D.’s in computer science, computer engineering or information. In the US, the 2011-2012 academic year saw the number of US undergraduates enrolled in a computer science major increase by 19.8 percent from the previous year.
Computing majors, in particular, are riding a wave of popularity. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the number of new undergraduate computing majors in U.S, computer science departments rose nearly 30 percent from the previous academic year, marking the fifth consecutive year of increased enrollment in computing majors.
Peter Harsha, the CRA’s director of government affairs, told Computerworld that while computer science enrollment numbers “are somewhat cyclical based on the perceived strength of the IT sector...students are much more aware of the importance of computational thinking in just about every other field of science and technology.”
They are also aware of the major’s marketability. “Students see that a degree in computer science gives them access to a wide range of well-paying careers,” Harsha told the outlet.
In the 2011-2012 academic year, a reported 1,929 doctorate degrees in computer science were awarded, the highest number to date. Despite this increased supply of job candidates, the unemployment rate for new Ph.D.s in computer science dipped significantly, from 1.6 percent in 2010-2011 to 0.4 percent in 2011-2012 .To put this in perspective: a recent analysis by the Wall Street Journal estimates that only 55 percent of recent law school graduates hold jobs that require a law degree.
No wonder computer science enrollment is growing.
The percentage of women among bachelor’s graduates in computer science also rose (albeit less dramatically) from 11.7 percent in the 2010-2011 academic year to 12.9 in 2011-2012.

In order to grow, sometimes you need to partner with your competition.
When I started high school after moving to San Francisco, the first thing I did as a new student was become friends with the toughest guys on campus. I thought that if I was friends with these bullies, I was less likely to be beaten up. I was right.

A small startup entering a competitive market can benefit from the same strategy.

I recently wrote that one of the three ground rules for growing your company is to go after large markets. But large markets mean many players--many companies looking for their piece of the pie. So where does that leave you, a small company, when trying to claim your territory?

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Every company has to start somewhere, and if you want your company to survive, you’ll first have to learn how to complement and work within the competitive landscape around you. Remember the evolutionary theory “survival of the fittest?”

Before you make a big splash and announce that your company is a force to be reckoned with, observe the current market. Identify savvy companies and smart people with core values that you respect. Instead of working against these established businesses, brainstorm ways that you could work with them. Can you provide a service they might need to grow? Can you partner with them to offer an alternative solution to their customers?

There are many positive outcomes to partnering with your potential competitor. Strategic alliances can amplify your brand, increase your customer base, give you access to expensive technologies and resources, and help you network and meet potential investors.

Nothing lasts forever.

If you do decide to work with another company, keep in mind that at some point, the market will probably tell you that it’s time to expand to a larger territory, or to stake out a larger share of profits. Your company’s growth plan may or may not include your partners.

Here’s where the downsides to a business alliance factor in. Sharing profits and resources can be a headache; it’s common for companies who have been working in tandem to squabble over accounts, new leads, and networking relationships. You’ll also run into conflicts if the other company begins to feel threatened by your growth, and perceives that you could potentially put them out of business.

Don’t let partnerships become a drag on company resources. When they’re no longer beneficial, you’ve got to admit that it’s time for a breakup.

Be warned: Partnership breakups can be just as bad as relationship breakups. It’ll never be a clean, surgical split. Let things happen organically, and try not to make rash decisions. To avoid burning bridges, don’t be antagonistic. Remain friendly, cooperative, and open during the entire separation process.

Whether or not you decide to forge your own path from the beginning or leverage partners to kickstart your company’s growth, you’ll need to be constantly vigilant. Extend partnership offers that have clear and defined benefits or be confident in working alone. And whatever you do, remember the lesson from high school: don’t let your competitors get a whiff of weakness.
